Muharram Month, Day of Ashura, Celebration

The tenth day of Month of Muharram, during which many milestones occurred according to Islamic resources, is named Noah's Pudding (Ashura) Day. This day with great significance in Muslim Turks' religious folk tradition, also gave its name to a dessert cooked and given out with special ceremonies on and after the tenth day of the month. 

This tradition was continued throughout the Ottoman period with pudding cooked in palace's kitchen. Ashura prepared by chefs and pantry masters under supervision of halva makers, were given out to palace divisions and the people for several days in special containers named “Ashura Tray” after 10th day of Muharram.

Ashura prepared in Anatolia by wealthy families and trade guilds, were handed out in ceremonies to which water men and locals attended, in some regions an animal was sacrificed after ashoura distribution. Today, observing ashoura fast, cooking and giving out Noah's pudding continues with all its customs.
