Turkish Delight and Cologne Conference in Sarajevo
A conference on "Turkish delight and cologne in Turkish culture" was held in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on October 3, 2022.
Yunus Emre Institute Turkish Education Director Prof. Dr. Yavuz Kartallıoğlu, who attended the conference organized by Yunus Emre Institute (YEI) as a speaker, stated in his statement that cologne is a quoted word and said, "With the invention of perfume and ethyl alcohol in the world since the 15th century, cologne gained great importance since 1709."
"TURKS HAVE BEEN PRODUCING THIS COLOGNE FOR 300 YEARS"
Stating that Turks used rose water before cologne, Kartallıoğlu said, "It is not very easy to produce and preserve rose water for a long time. After a while, rose water was replaced by cologne. The cost was also lower. Turks have been producing this cologne for about 300 years."
Stating that Turkish delight was used as "comfortable delight" in the Ottoman Empire, Kartallıoğlu said, "Turkish delight used to be made with flour, pekmez, and honey. With the invention of refined sugar and starch in the 19th century, Turkish delight became a Turkish dessert."
While the conference, attended by Yunus Emre Institute Vice President Ahmet Naim Çiçekler and Yunus Emre Institute Sarajevo Director Mehmet Akif Yaman attracted great attention, 16 kinds of Turkish delight and 10 different colognes were introduced to the participants.
