Training of Trainers under Way in Strasbourg

The second leg of the "Training of Trainers for Teaching Turkish to Bilingual Turkish Children" was held in Strasbourg, France, between September 21 and 29, 2019 thanks to cooperation between Yunus Emre Institute and the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities, with a view to training religious officials who are graduated of International Theology Program as Turkish language instructors within the context of the efforts to scale up mother tongue courses as independent courses during religious and cultural training given to children and young people at Turkish civil society organizations (CSOs) abroad.

During the first part of the program held at the Religious Affairs Directorate Turkish-Islamic Union campus, the participants were given seminars by various academics and writers on the statue of Turkish in Europe, migration, bilingualism, mother tongue and identity, the relationship between language and religion, teaching mother tongue to children and student profile in Europe.  During the second part of the program conducted between September 25 and 29, 2019, seminars were given by Yunus Emre Institute's experts and Marmara University faculty member Dr. Aslı Fişekoğlu on improving Turkish language skills, text preparation and adaptation, activity preparation and implementation, cultural awareness and intercultural interaction, Turkish grammar, vocabulary teaching, etc.

Approximately 70 participants attended workshops for developing activities and content held in the afternoon to reinforce what they learned in the morning. The prospective trainers attended the workshops entitled "First Lesson Practices," "Preparing Texts and Activities For the Proper Level," "Preparing and Examining Questions," and "Drama and Games," given by the Institute's experts, and prepared presentations consisting of activities for grammar, vocabulary teaching and improving language skills on the last day of the program. The contents and activities produced by the participating groups were evaluated by the Institute's experts during the joint sessions. The participants also received 15 books prepared by Yunus Emre Institute, including “Çocuklar İçin Türkçe 1” (Turkish for Kids 1), “Türkçe Öğreniyorum 1” (I am Learning Turkish 1), “Dede Korkut Hikâyeleri” (Stories of Dede Korkut), ve “Anadolu Hikâyeleri” (Stories of Anatolia) and the thematic dictionary entitled “Resimlerle Kelime Öğreniyorum” (Learning Vocabulary with Pictures), as gifts.

The "Training of Trainers for Teaching Turkish to Bilingual Turkish Children" program ended on Sunday, September 29, 2019, with the closing speeches delivered by Consul General of the Republic of Turkey to Strasbourg Muzaffer Rami Şaylıman, and Yunus Emre Institute Turkish Teaching and Turkology Director Prof. Dr. Yavuz Kartallıoğlu, and the presentation of certificates to the participants by experts from Yunus Emre Institute's and the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities.
