Turkish and Mexican Journalists Meet in Mexico City

"Türkiye -Mexico Media Meetings" event was held in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, under the coordination of Yunus Emre Institute (YEI).

The third series of "Media Meetings" events, developed and implemented by YEI with a civil initiative approach, were held in "Venezuela and Mexico" after "Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia", "Albania and Romania".

In the program held in a hotel in Mexico City, Turkish and Mexican journalists presented their ideas in order for the two countries to get to know each other better and get closer.

At the event, ideas were discussed to ensure that the two communities get to know and understand each other more closely through media sharing and publications, and to share the common values that come from the past and bring the societies together with the public opinion of the country.

Within the scope of Media Meetings, it was decided to increase cultural exchange and develop joint projects, create a cooperation network among participating media professionals and establish a sustainable communication platform.

At the meeting, it was agreed to encourage information exchange and cooperate with institutions in Mexico and Türkiye through YEI.

"Societies will know and understand each other better through the media"

Programda konuşan YEE Kültürel Diplomasi Akademisi Koordinatörü Dr. Melih Barut, enstitünün ismini aldığı şair Yunus Emre'nin "Gelin tanış olalım. İşi kolay kılalım." felsefesini sahada icra ettiğini söyledi.

Speaking at the program, YEI Cultural Diplomacy Academy Coordinator Dr. Melih Barut said that he implemented his philosophy of  "Let's get acquainted. Let's make the job easier." of the poet Yunus Emre, from whom the institute is named, on the field.

While giving information about the institute's work in his presentation, Barut noted that Mexican and Turkish communities could get to know each other through the media.

"Communities will know and understand each other better through the media. We are looking for what we can do for the Mexican and Turkish communities to know and understand each other, and we believe that we will achieve this with you." Barut said and thanked Mexican and Turkish journalists for their support.

YEE Mexico Coordinator Salih Gültekin said that they established YEI in Mexico in 2021 and worked to promote Turkish culture.

Stating that they are happy to host the program, "Our institute has many activities such as painting, music and handicrafts, history and culture conferences. We work with the philosophy of Yunus Emre. We will continue our work with the philosophy of 'We came to make hearts'." Gültekin said,

"We want to establish Ataturk Cultural Center in Mexico"

Radio Canon's programmer Federico La Mont and Takvim newspaper writer Ergün Diler made the opening speech in the "senior journalists" section of the program.

La Mont said that they love Türkiye and Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk very much, that Türkiye and Mexico are at the same level and their friendship will continue.

Using the following expressions, "We want to establish an Ataturk Cultural Center in Mexico. We are meeting at the MIKTA Strategy Forum, which includes Mexico, Indonesia, Türkiye, Australia and South Korea. This is an important forum, it is valuable for us to come together." La Mont said that they want to get to know Türkiye more closely.

Stating that there are 120 thousand journalists in Mexico, La Mont emphasized that he wishes Turkish journalists to closely follow the presidential elections that will be held in June and most likely the first female president will be elected.

Turkish and Mexican journalists talked about what the media can do to ensure cultural rapprochement.

Mexican Channel 22 Editor Jose Hernandez said that they follow the rise of the Turkish TV series industry and watch these series to get to know Turkish culture. Stating that they value cultural communication with Türkiye, "We should get to know each other in literature, art, cuisine and many other fields." Hernandez said,

Mexican journalist Jeziret Gallardo explained that he started playing the flute last year and wanted to get to know Turkish culture closely, and noted that he visited Türkiye two years ago and loved it very much.

Gallardo underlined that TV series are a tool to get to know Türkiye, but that alternative ways should be sought for cultures to meet.

Mexican Journalists Request Joint Productions

Guadalupe Gonzales Chavez, columnist for Mexico's El Heraldo de newspaper, said that relations with Türkiye have continued since the Ottoman Empire and that there are many interactions in the fields of carpets, coffee, art and architecture.

"Our relations are strong in three periods, with the Ottoman Empire, the Ataturk period and now with our cultural and diplomatic work. We must ensure the continuation of this in the field of language and communication. Turkey is at the top in TV series. Mexico has fallen behind in this regard. For this, they must meet at a common point. Joint productions in theatre, cinema and documentaries We have to sign." Chavez emphasized that the media should work for interaction in the fields of history, language and culture.

After the meeting, a communication network was established to continue communication between Mexican and Turkish journalists, and it was decided to provide a Turkish course to Mexican journalists at YEI in Mexico.
