World Turkish Coffee Day Celebrated in Madrid

Yunus Emre Enstitüsü continues to carry the unique flavors of Turkish cuisine, one of the most renowned cuisines in the world, appealing to different palates, to different regions through its gastrodiplomacy activities.

With the cooperation of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Madrid and Madrid Yunus Emre Institute, another gastrodiplomacy activity was held in Madrid, the capital of Spain, to promote Turkish coffee on the occasion of "World Turkish Coffee Day" declared by UNESCO.

The event, hosted by the Intercontinental Hotel on December 5, 2022 and sponsored by the coffee brand Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi, was attended by nearly a hundred people, including Burak Akçapar, Turkish Ambassador to Madrid, Cumhur Ersin Adıgüzel, Madrid Yunus Emre Institute Coordinator, diplomatic representatives, local institution representatives and invited guests.

PEOPLE OF MADRID TASTED TURKISH COFFEE WITH HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF HISTORY

Included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Turkish coffee stands out among other coffees with its unique aroma, grounds and foam, and was highly appreciated by the people of Madrid.

The Turkish coffee gastrodiplomacy activity, organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Madrid and Madrid Yunus Emre Institute for the first time in Spain in 2019, was held for the second time after the pandemic.

In his opening remarks, Turkish Ambassador to Madrid Burak Akçapar stated that Turkish coffee is one of the most delicious coffees in the world, that coffee symbolizes friendship and hospitality in Turkish culture, and that coffeehouses, which emerged as socializing spaces during the Ottoman Empire, functioned as a cultural and educational space.

YEI Madrid Coordinator Cumhur Ersin Adıgüzel stated that great care is taken in the preparation and presentation of Turkish coffee, which accompanies conversations in the family or among friends, because it holds such an important place in Turkish culture.

The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Madrid and the Madrid Yunus Emre Institute will continue activities to promote Turkish coffee in Spain in the coming years and Turkish coffee events will be made a tradition.
